Your hashtags
Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags per post. Extra hashtags are ignored, so choose the most specific ones.
Hashtags help the right people find your post. Early likes and engagement help it keep spreading once they do.
Boost your next postHow hashtags work in 2026
Hashtags used to be a reach hack: add 30 popular tags and hope for the best. That no longer works. In December 2025 Instagram introduced a hard limit of five hashtags per post and removed the option to follow hashtags. Today, hashtags on both Instagram and TikTok mainly act as labels that help the algorithm understand what your content is about and who to show it to.
That means the best hashtags are not the biggest ones. They are the ones that describe your post most accurately.
How to choose the right 3–5 hashtags
- Start with your exact topic. One hashtag that says precisely what the post is about, such as
#homeworkoutrather than#fitness. - Add your niche. One or two hashtags your target audience actually follows or searches, such as
#fitmomor#workoutathome. - Add one broader tag. A well-known category hashtag gives the algorithm extra context.
- Optionally add a branded tag for your business or a series you run.
- Check each hashtag before posting. Tap it in the app: if the recent posts are spammy or unrelated, pick another.
Instagram vs TikTok hashtags
| TikTok | ||
|---|---|---|
| Maximum | 5 per post (caption and first comment combined) | No fixed limit, only the caption length |
| Recommended | 3–5 | 3–5 |
| What matters most | Relevance to the post and your niche | Relevance plus words in your caption, on-screen text and audio |
| Avoid | Repeating the same set on every post | Generic tags like #fyp that say nothing about the video |
Common hashtag mistakes
- Using hashtags that have nothing to do with the post just because they are popular.
- Copying the same block of hashtags onto every post.
- Putting extra hashtags in the first comment on Instagram. They count toward the same five.
- Relying on hashtags instead of keywords. Both platforms now read your caption and on-screen text, so describe your content in plain words too.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Since December 2025 Instagram allows a maximum of five hashtags per post or Reel, and any extra hashtags are ignored. Hashtags in the first comment count toward the same limit. Pick the three to five that describe your post most precisely.
How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?
TikTok has no strict hashtag limit beyond the caption length, but three to five relevant hashtags usually work best. TikTok uses hashtags mainly to understand what your video is about, so accuracy matters more than volume.
Do #fyp and #foryou help my videos go viral?
There is no evidence they do. Millions of unrelated videos use them, so they tell TikTok nothing about your content. A specific hashtag that matches your topic is more useful.
Where do these hashtag suggestions come from?
They come from curated lists of well-established hashtags for each topic, combined with variations of your own keyword. They are not live popularity data, so tap a hashtag in the app before posting to check that its recent posts match your content.
Is my keyword stored?
No. Suggestions are generated in your browser and nothing you type is sent to our servers.
